If you have older wiring it can lower an LED bulb’s lifespan. The most common reason that an LED bulb can burn out is what it is connected to the wiring. What are some of those factors and how can you maximize the life of your bulbs? The Wiring And Wattage Despite that they can burn out and while it may be quite awhile for that to happen there are some factors that can accelerate this process. They seem to be able to last forever and when compared to the incandescent bulbs of your youth they do. Slowly pull it up so the end of the tab is about one quarter inch off the base of the socket.LED light bulbs are great. Use a needle-nose pliers and carefully grasp the sides of the brass tab near the tip of the tab, not where it bends down into the underside of the socket. If you discover the tab is flattened, then you must turn off the power to the lights, and as an additional safety safety measure, turn off the circuit breaker to the lights. People who twist bulbs in tightly will depress and flatten the tab so it does not spring back when a bulb is replaced. To prevent this arcing you must be sure the brass tab is always at about a 30-degree angle inside the bottom of the socket. When this happens, the electrical contact between the brass tab and the solder is broken and the light bulb acts as if it has been turned off when in fact the switch is on and the bulb is still in working condition. When this happens, the filament burns out rapidly. In some cases, this arcing can create a hole in the base of the bulb causing air to enter the bulb. Over a period of time, the solder can deform and the gap between the solder and the brass tab gets larger. If the brass tab at the base of the socket does not make firm contact with the bottom of the light bulb, a small electrical arc, or spark, can happen that starts to melt the solder. It is close in size, but not always the same size or height.ĬLICK HERE to get FREE & FAST BIDS from local electricians who will stick their fingers down and pull up the brass tab if you'r fearful of getting ZAPPED! More importantly the size of this drop of solder is not consistent from light bulb to light bulb. You will quickly notice that the bottom of most light bulbs has a small droplet of solder in the center of the base. Take several new light bulbs and inspect the base of each one. Do not ever stick your finger in the socket to test this, as you can get shocked if the power is on to the fixture. This tab is bent at an angle when the fixtures are new and will spring back and forth if depressed slightly. ![]() © 2017 Tim CarterĪt the base of light fixture sockets you will find a brass tab. You can clearly see the brass tab and if you look closely you can see it is raised up off the bottom of the socket. The flickering of light bulbs in lamps and fixtures can also be caused by bulbs that have been installed too tightly into light fixtures. I think they are twisting them into the socket too tightly. My first guess is that it can be traced to the person who has installed the light bulbs or previous owners of your home. Are the bulbs the wrong size? Is there a problem with the wiring? Cory Dixson, El Dorado Hills, CAĭEAR CORY: The problem with the premature failure of the light bulbs has nothing to do with the wattage or the wiring. Layers upon layers of well-documented and recreate-able pieces (that was Lewitt’s game as I understand it – that the process of creating and recreating, and the experience of seeing a piece that is a result of its location and time as much as anything else is the real art) make for a spectacular afternoon. We’re talking wall to wall, ceiling to floor, room after room of some of the most complex pencil drawings, some of the brightest color combinations, and some of the most thoughtful art I’ve ever experienced. I can’t explain the intricacy of this multi-floor (split by stages in his career) installation, but suffice it to say, some 65 artists lived on-site (seriously, MoCA is that big) for a period of 6 months to recreate some of Lewitt’s great pieces. The exhibit that took my breath away and had me staring literally at the walls from different distances for hours though, was the work (or rather reproduction of work) of Sol Lewitt. The physical representation of Wikipedia (below) brought a chuckle, and the room with the small portion of images of the Sun from Flickr (which took up an entire wall), and the small portion of images of people in front of images of the Sun (also from Flickr and also taking up a wall) made me realize just how much of our lives we share with the world (which is even more humorous when written from a blog). As a web developer, I’m sure this installation struck a special chord. The former was a great introspective on how the internet and technology has changed the way we interact with each other, share our lives’ experiences, and learn in the digital age. It’s unfair of me to overlook any of the exhibits, but for the sake of brevity (and I mean that loosely), I want to single out two of my favorites – an already passed exhibit (that I can’t find in the archives) about our digital lives, and the ongoing Sol Lewitt exhibit. This building is an exhibit in itself, and you might find yourself, as I did, wondering in bewilderment at the sheer size of the structure, and its implications as a remanent of the manufacturing backbone that the country was built on. ![]() Working with the fact that it is America’s largest contemporary art museum, the installations aren’t confined to the formulaically cramped, room-after-room style that I think many museum amateurs (like myself) find a subconscious turn-off of the museum-going experience. ![]() I won’t pretend to be an art critic, or act like my technical understanding of art far exceeds the ‘History of Modern Art’ course I tried to take as a senior-sleeper at UNC, but to ignore the fact that this museum, more than any I’ve visited before, makes you feel the art would be to do the space a serious injustice. Housed in the sprawling old Sprague Electric Company mill complex, the museum offers hours of enjoyment as you peruse the maze-like structure, and currently showcases a multi-floor Sol Lewitt exhibit that, in my honest opinion, deserves its own post on this blog. I don’t know how one could visit North Adams, MA and overlook a trip to MASS MoCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art). This is a good size of snatch block to use with most small to mid-sized vehicles used for overlanding and off-roading: Jeeps, SUVs, and pickup trucks. The groove in the pulley is wide, which makes it a good choice for both metal and synthetic winch lines. The Epic is one of the best quality snatch blocks on the market – if not the best. It’s a bit confusing, but this means that the snatch block can be used with winches rated up to 12,000 pounds pulling capacity (because you want your snatch block rated to twice what your winch is rated). This model has “12T” embossed on the side, which means it’s rated for loads of 12 tons (or 24,000 lbs). The Warn Epic Snatch Block is made of forged steel and is powder coated to prevent corrosion. |
